The Tonal Thread

As a designer, my eye never truly rests, it continuously filters the world through a lens of texture, light, and architectural geometry. A recent excursion through the historic heart of France and the vibrant avenues of Paris served as a profound reminder that the most compelling visual narratives are born from a lifelong commitment to a cohesive tonal thread. True curation is not about capturing isolated moments, it is about recognising the subtle, matching palettes that bind entirely different subjects together.

The Power of Tonal Curation

Throughout my career, my work has always been driven by architectural and lifestyle vignettes that, to a sharp eye, speak the exact same aesthetic language. During my travels this summer, this philosophy felt more active than ever. From the exquisite, timeworn patina of a historic Parisian entryway to the magnificent, centuries old limestone geometry preserved within the Louvre, the foundations of great design remain anchored in authenticity and structural integrity.

This thread of refined elegance extends effortlessly into modern luxury. Observing the custom, cream enamel finish and rich tan leather detailing of the bespoke luxury bicycles at Cheval Blanc Paris, or the flawless, fine art symmetry of the hunting hounds resting within the arches at Château de Cheverny, the message remains unassailable, true luxury resides in the details.

An Enduring Stamp on Style

Whether observing a beautifully staged window display, a vintage chandelier, or the raw texture of an ancient stone wall, my focus has always been on the harmony of hues and tones. At Powder Grey, my signature baseline has always stripped away the chaotic noise of predictable trends to focus purely on editorial curation.

By weaving together warm creams, muted earth tones, and highly polished textures, we have spent years creating timeless, high status spaces that evoke a sense of calm, independent security. True design is an international dialogue, one that continues to define the enduring aesthetic and legacy of the Powder Grey brand.

Global Business Awards 2026 - Nominee

The most award worthy aspect of Powder Grey Interior & lifestyle is my commitment to breaking down traditional barriers of interior design to create a truly inclusive, holistic lifestyle brand that is rooted in community spirit.

Design is often perceived as an exclusive niche for a select few, but my mission has always been to make it accessible to everyone, showing that anyone can tweak and elevate their home to improve their everyday life. My signature emphasis on Powder Grey stems its incredible versatility as a timeless, grounding foundation that beautifully compliments and elevates any other colour palette. This philosophy of quality and comfort extends seamlessly into my curated lifestyle collection of traditional, well made knitwear.

Every single project I complete concludes with my signature ‘+’ sign off, symbolising a personal stamp of care, connection, and a job lovingly completed. However, what truly sets Powder Grey apart is how I pour that same care back into our local community. From supporting other clubs, scouts, flower shows, Lauder Lights, Lauder Choir and to raising funds through raffles, The kings Trust, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, other charities, to supporting local artist David Cass, and running free public giveaways on Facebook, to name a few, my business success is entirely intertwined with given back.

This nomination recognises a boutique brand that doesn’t just design beautiful spaces but actively works to uplift it calls home.

Behind The Label

Fran Mart - Photographer & Creative Director

 1. When and how did you become a photographer and who inspired you?
I never planned on becoming a photographer; it was something I stumbled upon after losing my younger brother. Photography, particularly self-portraits, helped me process the emotions I was dealing with, almost like it found me. The experience opened my eyes to a new way of seeing the world and expressing my emotions, leading me down an unexpected path. I'm self-taught, and I'm constantly inspired by the ability to tell stories that engage the soul.

2. How would you describe your signature style?
My signature style is deeply emotional and introspective, often translating feelings into images. I aim to capture something beyond what we can see, focusing on the sensory experience of a moment. Whether I'm working on personal projects or with clients, my work is about connecting the inner and outer worlds, bringing emotion and storytelling to each image.

3. Where do you look for creative inspiration?
I find inspiration in emotions and in the world around me. I believe creativity is a journey that often begins within, and for me, it started in my childhood daydreams. Now, it comes from engaging my senses, being in nature, and letting life’s ups and downs guide my creative process. Scotland’s ever-changing landscapes and light are a constant source of inspiration.

4. What is your favorite place or location to take photography?
Scotland, without a doubt. I’m drawn to the intensity of the weather, the changing seasons, and the unique light that you find here, especially in the more remote areas. The rugged landscapes and dramatic shifts in weather give me goosebumps and keep me captivated every time. I also love Edinburgh for its timeless atmosphere; wandering through its streets feels like stepping into another era.

5. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your hopes for the future?
I’m a freelance photographer based in Edinburgh, originally from Andalucía, Spain. My work often involves capturing interiors and natural environments, exploring slow travel, and telling visual stories. I’m passionate about the creative process, which I see as a journey of self-expression and discovery. For the future, I hope to continue exploring new places, connecting with people through my work, and allowing my creativity to evolve with each new project. My goal is always to keep finding those moments that make time stand still.
